THINK IT OUT

1. Does the poem talk of an exclusively personal experience or is it fairly universal?

Answer:- No doubt, the poet talks of an exclusively personal experience in the poem. But the poem has a fairly universal appeal. What happens between the poet and his son happens to most fathers and sons. The generation gap is so wide and differences are so deep that the gap that separates those stands as it is. Every father wishes his son would live under the same roof with him and share his beliefs and love.

2. How is the father’s helplessness brought out in the poem?

Answer:- Father is quite helpless. There is no dialogue between the son and the father. Silence surrounds and separates them. He doesn’t understand him and he is a stranger to him. He wants his prodigal son to return and live with him. But it remains only a wishful thinking. They remain separated as before.

3. Identify the phrases and lines that indicate distance between father and son?

Answer:- The following phrases bring out the deep differences that separate both of them:
i) ‘I don’t understand this child’ (stanza 1)
ii) ‘I know nothing of him’ (stanza 2)
iii) ‘We speak like strangers’  (stanza 2)
iv) ‘....What he loves, I can’t share’(stanza 2)
v) ‘Silence surrounds us’ (stanza 3)
vi) ‘He speaks, I can’t understand’ (stanza 4)

SHORT ANSWER TYPE QUESTIONS

1. Why is the father unhappy and what is his problem?

Answer:- The father is unhappy. His problem is that he has no dialogue with his son. They don’t understand each other and are like strangers. Though they lived under the same roof, they have nothing common in them. Their outlook and temperament are so different that they remain separated from each other.

2. Why does the father want to build a relationship with the son?

Answer:- There is literally no dialogue between the father and the son. They don’t understand each other. Inspite of their living under the same roof for years, they are strangers to each other. So the helpless father wants to build a relationship with his estranged son.

3. How did the father feel helpless inspite of the fact that the son is built to his design?

Answer:- Physically, the son is built up as his father wished him to be. But this similarity is deceptive. The father feels helpless as he is like a stranger to his son. They can’t talk to each other. Nor have they any kind of understanding between them.

4. What does the father think of his ‘prodigal’ son?

Answer:- The father is in a mood to forgive his son. He wants that his prodigal son may return to his father ‘s house and start living under the same roof with him. He doesn’t want that he should create and live in the world of his own.

5. Does the father want his son to lead an independent life? Give your comments.

Answer:- No, the father wants his  prodigal son to return to his father’s house. He should not ‘move’ out and ‘make’ his own world. The father doesn’t want the son to lead an independent life. On the other hand, he wants him to live under the same roof and share his love and beliefs.

6. ‘...... we must live on the same globe and the same land’. Explain the significance of these lines.

Answer:- The father wants to convince his estranged son. Inspite of their deep differences, they must live on the same globe. They will have to live in the same world. Living together in the same world, it becomes necessary that they should develop mutual understanding. They should build up a relationship between them.
